• Trauma in various populations (Pregnant, children, and elderly);
• Trauma cardiac arrest.
Target Audience:
The ITLS course has a basic and advanced version and any registered medical professional is welcome to attend the training.
ITLS and ATLS are different courses in that they are accredited with different international bodies (ITLS being accredited with the American Academy of Emergency Physicians) but both courses teach a systematic approach to trauma and trauma management. ATLS however does teach additional advanced surgical skills not included in the ITLS course and so potential candidates should consider their requirements prior to registration as the Academy does not offer ATLS (Candidates who intend specialising in Surgery, or who work in a Level 1 trauma centre should consider completing ATLS).
ITLS is sufficient for all levels of providers (Doctors, Nurses, and EMS staff) who are expected to assess and manage acute trauma in any setting.
Course Structure:
The course manual is provided ahead of the training for pre-study. The classroom sessions focus on the practical implementation of the theory learned prior to the course and consists of many simulated scenarios and the following skill stations:
• Control of life-threatening bleeding using various techniques including tourniquets and haemostatic agents;
• IV and IO access;
• Decompression of tension pneumothorax;
• Spinal motion restriction and extrication of patients in various settings using various items of equipment; and
• Stabilisation of extremity trauma.
